22"? I'm thinking of going ot 70"! Just kidding. Most likely I'm buying in the 47" to 52". I feel that's the ideal for 7' to 8' viewing distance. Right now I play on a 50" rear projection, but it's 4:3, so in HD it becomes like a 42" screen (black bars top and bottom).

there are a couple of dell ultrasharp sale threads on rfd. I think you can a 22" (with 1080p+hdmi for under $200).
I agree with lieutenantdan though, anything over 40" isnt going to help because you cant see the whole screen unless you sit far back enough. I find 50" annoying sometimes, but im too lazy to move my ps3 back to my room because i use media server to watch movies.

good job dan man im so happy that ur helping with and ur a lil active with the forums again anyway... i cant recommend a size for a tv, what i recommend is a tv that perfectly fits your eyesight for the distance you will be playing . this is for hardcore gaming though. but if your playing in a living room couch, a bigger tv is better. but my tv in my living room is 53 inch and i have problems playing on it. i dont know if its the tv or that im used to a smaller tv but it just doesn't feel right
i use sd resolution tv and i sit back about 3-4 ft from it when playing mine is like 27 inch i think and i luv it hd tv =to much sensitivity problems 4 me.......i could use my 42 inch hd tv but i dont because of this

ZUEY!!! Need your help finding the right TV for me. Last Saturday, I got my fancy new leather sectional + end/coffee tables, but noticed that it's bigger than I thought it would be. So the space between my TV and coffee table is much closer than before. To fix this, I'm planning to retire my current rear projection old beast and get with the times with a flat screeen TV.
Ideally, I want something in the 47" to 52" range. Since it will be further back (compared to the 2' that my rear projection sticks out), 47" won't appear much larger than 42", that I have now.
TV needs to be good for gaming, sports, and regular tv watching. So what type of specs should I be looking for? I'm open to any type of TV.
I'll leave the price range open for now, since I don't know what constitutes a good value for TVs right now.

I played a 40 inch and it made things so much harder. But that's my opinion

Hey areksoo, I saw somewhere on the flyers they were selling 50" LCD TV for 500 bucks - Toshiba.
Not sure if it was SIG electronics or whatever.
But either way, you should hold off til boxing day. I'm pretty sure you can find a nice one for less than 500. They are getting cheaper by the second.

The deal is now dead, but there was an LG 50" plasma for $509 at Dell. Dunno if that TV was any good though.
Last year's boxing day was a huge disappointment, so was Black Friday and Cyber Monday this year. These sales are still crazy in the US, but in Canada, retailers will just put up a very small supply of greatly discounted items and the rest are 10% off at best.
My hope is prior to Christmas, some retailers hit the panic button...

The panasonic 54vt25 for $2199 was a ridiculous deal. Just wait till boxing day like rizzo said.

54" might be too big and I don't want 3D shit.
So I narrowed it down to 2 TVs:
Panasonic TCP50S2
and
Samsung PN50C6500
Both TVs retail for roughly $1,400, but go on sale for about $1,000.
What I don't get is the difference in moving up levels... for example, the next level up for Panasonic is the G series, but I don't see any benefit worth the additional $300-$500. Same with Samsung Series 5 vs Series 6. Also both seem to be good for gaming and as well as other things like sports.
I don't care much for the VT and GT series for Panasonic or the Series 7 or 8 for Samsung as they are 3D TVs and I refuse to pay for shit I need to wear glasses and ain't gonna use.
A buddy tells me to go with the Sharp Quattron... but what I don't get is what's the point of "yellow" if nobody brodcasts, films, or makes games in "yellow".

People who buy the 3d tv's now are chumps
Toshiba just came out with a 3d tv that you don't need to wear glasses for. Sooner or later every TV will be in 3d without the stupid glasses.
I think your $1000 budget for a TV is too high. Their prices come down almost every week, by boxing day I'm SURE you can get a kickass TV for less than $700.

$700 might be pushing it... unless I go with a lower end TV.
I just don't want to wait for Boxing day which may or may not have any real sales. Last year was awful, the year before was pretty good, though everyone had vastly limited supplies.
Leon's right now has the Panasonic TCP50S2 for $899 + free shipping. This unit has hit $1,000 before, but never below that... at least from my research. I can save a few more bucks PMing with BB.... hmmm... BB by my house has stock too!

can you actually tell the difference between a high-end / low-end TV?
Most stores love to mess around with the settings so expensive TVs look like they are more bright and colorful
Try researching on TV forums with the models you're interested in

I ended up buying the Panasonic TCP50S2... it's a good, but not great TV. But definately a HUGE improvement from my current TV.
I could have waited until boxing day and I'm sure I could have saved a few bucks... but trying to get it online (for it to go OOS by the time I check out) or lining up ar 4am at BestBuy isn't worth it for me. The way I see it is I got the TV I wanted for the best price to date... can't ask for much more then that.
